Every Lithuanian knows a saying – “if it wasn’t for Dzukija berries and mushrooms, their girls would be naked”. Let’s add some context to better explain the context of the saying.
So, Dzukija region is probably the least fertile when it comes to soil – because sand is the main form of soil found in the region – and where there’s sand there are also pine forests. Forests are the main source of food here – you can even taste the forest honey -which brings us back to the saying – if it wasn’t for the forest goodies – the region might have been destitute.
Speaking of food – the locals weren’t only alive because of the mushrooms – they did manage to cultivate some potatoes and buckwheat. As such, the most popular Dzukija dish -“bandos” was born – not found in any other Lithuanian region.
Further on our food journey of the region, we shall visit local cheesemakers, who are known for both traditional lithuanian cottage cheese making and other traditional cheeses made with French cheesemaking techniques. All of which you’ll be able to try on this tour.
A bit for the mystery – what are “zool’s tears”? You shall learn on this tasting trip of Dzukija region.
As always, you can customize the trip that is set to include the overview of the region and the national forest – please see additional info in the detailed description, or simply contact us.
